Eastern Seaboard Explorer
Bakpak Staff Writer Shilo Urban
Travel through the distinct maritime cultures of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in this relaxing itinerary, an ocean and nature lover’s dream. Villages await you along with one-road towns, plenty of fresh seafood, a thriving Celtic culture, pockets of French speakers and the most amazing tidal surges in the world. Drive time in this part of the world is slow, so factor in plenty of hours to get from A to B, even if it doesn’t look too far on the map.
Highlights
Crack open a freshly steamed lobster in Halifax for lunch, walk along the beach during the afternoon and after your blueberry pie, board a ship with tall sails for a sunset cruise. Witness the craziest tides in the world at the Bay of Fundy where the difference in sea level can be over thirty meters in some places; at Hopewell Rocks you can literally walk on the ocean floor when the tide is out. Camp and hike in the pristine wilderness of Prince Edward Island from your home base of Charlottetown. Drive the legendary Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, where the wild ocean waves crash against the mountainous terrain, and hit the beach and book a cabin in Dingwall, the lovers’ secret spot of Nova Scotia.
Suggested Route
Starting Point: Halifax
Ending Point: Halifax
Time Frame: 10 Days +/-
From Halifax drive north on Highway 102/104 through Moncton and head south on Highway 1 towards Saint John to experience the high tides of the Hopewell Rocks. Backtrack to Moncton and drive up to Charlottetown, a beautiful base for exploring rugged P.E.I. Coming back through Moncton head east this time on Highway 104 to reach Nova Scotia, making a loop northwards thought Cape Bretons Highlands National Park before heading back south through Halifax. Accommodation options are extremely limited in some parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, making it important to plan ahead with your stops and reservations.
