San Diego Beach Life
If you want to experience the laid back beach life, there are hostels in Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and Point Loma.
Ocean Beach
Great place to hang out for a few weeks and learn how to surf. Newport Ave. is the main street and hosts inexpensive places to eat and be merry. From the OTTC take the #35 bus to the water.
Point Loma/ Cabrillo Nat’l Monument
On the tip of Point Loma at the end of Catalina Blvd. Commemorates the era of Cabrillo’s arrival in 1542. Beautifully restored lighthouse and sensational ocean views. Take the #26 bus to Cabrillo.
Coronado Island
Seven mile strip of sand, accessed by car over the Coronado Bridge or via the Bay Ferry for $3.50.
San Diego Harbor Excursions
Operate the Bay Ferry to Coronado Island ($3.50). Also offer 1 and 2 hr boat tours of the San Diego skyline, the U.S. Navy fleet and Coronado Bridge. Costs from $12.
Mission Beach
Young, trendy nightlife and surf community. You can stroll (or jog) along Ocean Front Walk, a boardwalk that stretches to La Jolla. Also visit Belmont Park on Mission Blvd., a mini amusement park with a famous rollercoaster, the Giant Dipper, at 3146 Mission Blvd. From the Old Town Transit Center (OTTC) take the #34 bus to the beach.
Ellen Scripps Cove Park
Warm waters invite swimmers and snorkelers. The protected inlet allows sea life to flourish. Coast Blvd. and Girard Ave.
La Jolla
Whether you want to swim, surf, hike, bum on the beach, La Jolla is the place to go. Great surfing at Tournaline and Windansea beaches. From the OTTC take the #34 bus.
